About Salt Lake County Council

The Salt Lake County Council is the body of county government that allows the citizens of the County to govern themselves by electing their chosen representatives. Serving as the legislative branch for SLCo, the Council implements rules, regulations, ordinances, policies, and administrative codes – among many other important functions.

The Council directly affects the lives of County residents in many ways. Specifically, the Council establishes the County budget, establishes fees, and sets tax rates. The Council also controls and determines the use and application of all County resources.

What Is Composition of the Salt Lake County Council?

The Council is composed of nine Council members. Three members – District A, B, and C – are chosen at-large and elected for six-year terms. The remaining six members – Districts 1 through 6 – represent specific geographic areas of the County and are elected for four-year terms.

District 5 encompasses parts of Herriman, Riverton, and West Jordan. It includes portions of West Valley City, as well as the entirety of Bluffdale. Finally, this District covers the portion of Draper that lies west of I-15 and the portion of South Jordan that lies east of Bangerter Highway.

What Is Your Salt Lake County Council District?

It is important that you know which SLCo Council district you live in, as this will determine which candidates are running to represent you and your interests.

To search for your district number, visit this link. Type in your physical (street) address and click on the black dot that comes up to indicate your residence. This will display all of your voting information, including your Precinct number, State House and Senate districts, State and Local School Board Districts, and your Salt Lake County Council District.

When Are Salt Lake County Primary Elections?

The Salt Lake County primary election date is June 28, 2022. However, early voting begins on June 21 and runs through June 24. Early voting is from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM only. In-office early voting runs from June 14 through June 24, from the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

If you plan to vote by mail, the County will be mailing ballots out during the week of June 6.

How Do You Register to Vote for Salt Lake County Council?

It is critical that you register to vote a minimum of 11 days prior to the election, to ensure your voter eligibility. To vote in the SLCo primary, that means you must register not later than June 17, 2022.

You can register in a variety of ways, including registering to vote online in Salt Lake County.

If you don’t register to vote on time, you may still have options. For example, you can do same-day voter registration during early polling hours. However, you must demonstrate your identity and provide proof of residence. You can view a list of valid forms of identification for Salt Lake County elections online.
